Northowram Fields CC First XI v Buttershaw SP on Sat 23 Jun 2007 at 1.00
Northowram Fields CC Won 35 runs (6pts)

Match report Northowram pulled through a testing game to gain their fourth win in a row against local rivals Buttershaw.

Skipper Robert Larner once again lost the toss, so the rams were sent in to bat on what looked like a bowler’s paradise. Paul Bottomley was the first man to fall, hitting the fielders too many times, this seemed to frustrate him in to a loose shot, but we will let him off as he was certainly carrying some sort of “injury” to his behind!!! This brought Pat Weisner to the crease, and well, what followed was something of the sublime. Weisner raced in to the forty’s of probably only 12 or so balls, hitting six after six. At one point six sixes in one over were on the cards from Weisner, for only the level headed or some might say, spoil sport of a captain to have a word in his ear to “not even think about it”!!!

After Weisner was out for 69, a steady fall of wickets kept the rams from posting a daunting score, and only the captain, Larner showing any really fight and determination. Billy Grogan was the last man out, one of 4 people who got ducks (I will name them for the record, the others were Jason Smith, Chris Thompson and Paul Mitchell), to leave Larner carrying his bat with 109 not out, a truly remarkable innings. This left Buttershaw with 231 to chase.

The Ram’s bowlers started well, with seamer Matthew Rushworth taking the first three wickets leaving the visitors on 69 for three. But some poor bowling by some of the Ram’s slow bowlers enable Buttershaw to race to 127 for 3 with 26 overs still remaining, with many balls being dispatched in to the “cow pats” in the next field.

At this point the visitors were favourites to win the game. Only until the other of the Rams fast bowlers Billy Grogan, came on to bowl, did the rams put any sort of brakes on the visitor’s innings. It was Grogan who also made the breakthrough, Scott Hadnum flying to his right to take a superb catch in the covers, which can only be described as breathtaking. Grogan then took another wicket, getting through the batsmen’s defences to take out his middle stump. The game although was still in the balance at this stage, but two wickets by Rushworth once again pegged back the visitors who then required 47 off the last 7 overs. Larner then made a brave move in bringing back Gary Rodger on to bowl the last few overs, and Rodger didn’t let his captain down taking the last three wickets to clean up the tail, including the important wicket of opening batsmen Potts who had batted well through the Buttershaw innings.

The Rams eventually won by 34 runs, to go 12 points clear at the top of the table and to leave the Rams supporters still hoping of bringing the glory days back to the club!
