Buttershaw SP v Northowram Fields CC First XI on Sat 08 Sep 2007 at 1.00
Northowram Fields CC Won by 7 wkts (6pts)

Match report Tom – bring a deck chair to next weeks game, because after Saturdays performance you will be watching the cricket, rather than playing it! Mind you, I could be joining you with a bowling average of 91 and batting average of 0!!

The Rams did not take their foot of the gas, despite winning the division 1 title the previous week, and also missing 5 regular 1st team players, as they trounced local rivals Buttershaw St. Pauls by 7 wickets with Rob Larner and Scott Hadnum making glorious centuries.

The toss was won by the Buttershaw captain who elected to bat on a flat looking surface. Northowram, without 3 regular bowlers, had to rely on Gary Rodger, Matthew Rushworth, and Scott Hadnum to bowl their 50 elected overs. These three bowled well for the majority of the Buttershaw innings, but the last ten over's wielded over 100 runs, as tiredness set in, after the home side had been reduced to 180 for 8. The Buttershaw innings came to a close at a massive 274 all out, with the impressive Gary Rodger bowling none stop from the church end, and finishing with figures of 5 wickets for 101 runs.

If Northowram were going to chase down this massive score, it would have to certainly have to take some fabulous batting by at least 2 batsmen, and maybe even 3 batsmen. Things didn’t get off to the best of starts when promoted Matthew Rushworth was bowled for a duck. Some might say this was the best move he did all day, as this brought Scott Hadnum to the crease, and together with skipper Robert Larner, put on a massive partnership of 253 runs, yes it is not a printing error, 253 runs! The Northowram archives have been painstakingly scrutinised throughout the weekend to see if this partnership, was infact the biggest ever partnership for the club!!

Larner and Hadnum bullied all 8 bowlers used by the home side, as Larner was eventually bowled for a brilliant 129 (who marched of the field as though he had got a duck!), and Hadnum remained unbeaten on 127 as Buttershaw's score of 274 was overhauled inside 46 over’s with the loss of just 3 wickets.

This victory has to go down as the team’s greatest victory of the season, Larner and Hadnum being a class apart. The five non-regular members of Saturday’s victory, all played their part performing well in the field, and Under 15 players Isaac James, and Sam Gleeson fielded remarkably well on their first team debuts. Next weeks final game could throw up a few selection dilemmas for skipper Robert Larner, as you can’t change a winning team, meaning he may have to disappoint the 5 regular 1st teamers who could become available next week.

Once again a fantastic victory for the Rams, and the fact that they were playing a Buttershaw team that viewed this match as their “cup final” for the season, with just 6 regular first team players, means the victory will go down in the Northowram Fields record books!!!!
