Altofts v Northowram Fields CC First XI on Sat 12 May 2007 at 1.00
Northowram Fields CC Won 4pts

Match report It was a dark and dull day in the Wakefield village of Altofts, but not for the Northowram who kept there unbeaten start to the season aloft with another resounding victory!!

Skipper Rob Larner won a vital toss in which bowling first was the obvious preferred option with the overcast and damp conditions.

The Rams opening bowling attack of Matthew Rushworth and Billy Grogan put the ball in the right areas in the first 15 overs, in which they tried and tested their opponents without reward. The only wicket coming from a fabulous bit of fielding from fielder Paul “Mr. Tickle” Bottomley who picked the ball up and hit the stumps with a direct hit! (Yes you read it right, a direct hit!!!). Chris Thompson was introduced in the 17th over a struck straight away (with another pie) having an opponent caught behind.

The tight bowling was continued by the team’s veterans Gary Rodger and Chris Thompson. This pressure began to toll on the Altofts batters and there was another run out, when the ball was hit straight to Billy Grogan at square leg who thankfully threw to Thompson at the bowlers end who whipped of the bails to the away supporters delight.

Altofts were certainly struggling at 62 for three with 20 overs remaining. In remaining overs Altofts began to pick up the run rate (thankfully because there was defiantly discontent amongst supporters who were wondering why they had wasted their time in coming) many thanks to their captain Steve Palmer. Englishman Scott Hadnum replaced Gary Rodger from the score box end and bowled the last six overs with the reward of two wickets, in a remarkable spell of medium pace and leg spin! Some big hits upt the Altofts score to 168 for 7 of their fifty overs, but surely the Rams batsmen would have no trouble in over turning this modest total. But at least we had a game eh?!!

The Rams innings after tea was delayed with a bit of rain, but thankfully the skies cleared and innings was able to start without any loss in overs.

Openers Paul Bottomley and Rob Larner put on 70 for the first wicket, which set a good platform for the rams innings, before Rob Larner was trapped leg before. Gary “Postman Pat” Rodger fell cheaply, and was followed to the pavilion by Mr. Tickle. Australian (note: He is an Aussie when he doesn’t perform and Englishman when he does) Scott Hadnum had a couple of delightful fours before he went for ONLY 9. But some big hitting by Irishman Pat Weisner (Certainly bored to death by the days podding) brought the Altofts score within sight, before he was bowled for 42 trying another lusty blow. Specialist fielders Ian Larner and Jason Smith brought the Rams home to gain a victory by 5 wickets.

The rams although produced another fine performance would have been disappointed not to have gain the maximum 6 points, but can take the fact that they are unbeaten in to next weeks crunch tie against fellow high flyers Wakefield St. Michaels.
