Moorlands v Northowram Fields CC First XI on Sat 25 Aug 2007 at 1.00
Northowram Fields CC Won by 3 wkts (4pts)

Match report Northowram Fields guaranteed promotion to the Premier League of the Central Yorkshire Cricket League, and moved within 1 point of becoming Champions, with a great away victory over promotion contenders Moorlands.

Chief Robert Larner rather surprisingly opted to field on a flat looking wicket, already without the teams leading wicket taker Chris Thompson. Moorlands started well, with Billy Grogan and Matthew Rushworth unable to provide any early breakthroughs. Grogan and Rushworth tried for 60 balls to get a wicket, bowling in swingers, away swingers, yorkers, bouncers, cutters, quicker balls, slower balls, but it just took the old man of the team, Gary Rodger, 1 ball to gain a wicket, lolloping up, and bowling his quicker ball of 27 mph, which found a leading edge and popping up to Scott Hadnum in close.

This wicket was the first of 5 for Gary Rodger who bowled beautifully throughout with his nagging line and length, the other bowler who deserves a mention was Jason Smith who was brought out of the wilderness to bowl 13 quality overs, and really prove why he claims to be the number 1 spinner in the club.

The Moorlands innings closed on 169 for 9, with Rodger picking up 5 wickets, Smith 1, and Rushworth 2.

Chasing 170 to win always looked a difficult task with a depleted looking batting line up, and things didn’t look good early on, with Gary Rodger and Scott Hadnum falling cheaply, both dismissed in similar fashion, cutting rank long hops to the point fielder. Jason Smith and opener Robert Larner steadied the ship before, Smith, then Rushworth and Ian Larner (the George Clooney wannabe) all were out in quick succession.

At the other end skipper Larner was still batting well, and he remained unbeaten on 73 as the target was chased down with 3 wickets remaining, Larner hitting the winning runs as the Rams travelling fans went wild on the boundary and with wicket keeper Paul Mitchell at the other end breaking out in a “King Cong” style dance celebration.

Next weeks game is against East Ardsley, in what should be a carnival atmosphere, as the Rams could be presented with the winning trophy if they are to gain the 1 point required.
